How Should I Train To Build Muscle Versus Building Strength?

How Should I Train To Build Muscle Versus Building Strength?

Training can be confusing. Lots of exercise classes and systems seem all singing, all dancing, they can sort EVERYTHING for you!!

So you start and everything doesn't get sorted and you end up confused. They said it would?!

The challenge is being specific (and naughty marketing!) - nothing can sort everything.

So the starting point is understanding what exactly it is that you want to change or achieve - which can be hard - then being sure that your training routine is working.

Here, Head Warrior, Amy, talks more about this:

If you’d like to find out more about how we train and our ethos, click below to read Amy’s recent interview with Bulk Hackers

I believe motivation, as most people understand it, is a fallacy. Most of us aren’t waking up being like, ‘yes I’m so pumped to go to the gym’, so waiting for that feeling can really hold some people back. For me, it’s more of a dedication to myself, because I want what I want, and I recognise that it’s consistency that is going to get me there. Time in the gym, and in recovery and all parts of the process is an investment in myself.

We all make time for the things that are important to us, and this process is incredibly important for me. It’s part of building my identity, developing who I am, and I can’t make many things more important than that!

The Warrior Team Update

The Warrior Team Update

We think it's fun to be able to share with you guys what we get up to each month, so here goes - PBs and progress and a bit of a laugh…

What are our secrets to getting the progress we get?

  1. Work hard - be prepared to show up for sessions even when we don’t feel like it.

  2. Be willing to fail and f**k things up.

  3. Know that it takes time - things rarely happen as fast as we want them to.

  4. Seek outside help - we all have our own coaches depending on what goals and struggles we have.

If you’d like to find out more about how we do it, click the link below to book your consultation.

Starting to deadlift...

Starting to deadlift...

What does a good deadlift actually look like?

Where do I even get started?

We hear these questions a lot, so you’re in good company if you’ve thought this! Even if you have no idea what a deadlift is, don’t worry.

In the video below, we show one of the Warrior team, Kes, on day one of deadlifting, after watching some YouTube videos and fast forwarding today. Technique and strength have improved, and it’s great to see that we all have to start from the top:

If this video resonates with you and you’d like to:

  • Get stronger

  • Tone up

  • Learn how to use the ‘weights bit’ in the gym

Why are we different?

Why are we different?

It's January and there are so many personal trainers talking about New Year's resolutions and what you can do and how easy it is and it probably feels quite overwhelming!

So, instead of telling you to get off your arse, it's easy and what are you waiting for, I'm going to offer you a video today to talk a little bit about my story, where I've come from and most importantly, how that can help you if you decide you'd like to work with us.

We've been through the things you're going through and come out the other side, so we'd love to help you make life easier and stop you going round in circles with the same things.

If you'd like to come and talk to us about how we can do that together, click the link below:

  • Get some tips on how you can start seeing your body differently.

The link between weight loss and your mindset

The link between weight loss and your mindset

Recently, I explained to you why I picked the name 'The Warrior Programme'.

This week, I'd like to go into more detail about the mindset coaching aspect of what I do.

Many of us want to make changes in our bodies, me included. When I started this journey, I wanted to lose weight, get fitter and generally feel better about myself. I was at university, eaten a load of crap and spent 24/7 studying, and I ended up putting on 3 stone.

So, I wanted to lose this and fast! I did, and the main theme for today, which I'd like to share with you, are the changes in my mind which enabled me to do this and keep the weight off for in excess of five years.

Let's start with what I believed about myself and my situation:

Time spent on exercise and looking after myself was wasted

I didn't have time

I couldn't afford it

I was never meant to have a good body

I was unattractive

This was just my lot

Now, none of that is particularly motivating or empowering to actually get up and do something about your situation!

So, I made a start using pure willpower and muscle, which will get you a certain distance, but not the whole way. Furthermore, for the changes to last, the desire to change and maintain the changes needs to come from somewhere deeper.

What did I do? I worked on changing my beliefs to:

I have a healthy, lean body

I am confident in my appearance

I love what I see in the mirror

I am a strong, confident woman

This started literally by me writing these down and saying them over and over again to myself and feeling ridiculous! After a while, they sunk in and I started to believe it.

Now, I know some of you will be thinking 'b*****ks!* and I don't blame you, I used to. But my point is, if you have an effective belief system and value your self, you are vastly more likely to take the appropriate physical steps to make changes in your lifestyle.

For example, someone starts working with a personal trainer, but they believe they will always be 'fat'. They are more likely to leave things off their food diary, not do their home training sessions and not take it seriously.

Whereas, someone who believes they can have what they want, will take all the action they can.

So, naturally, I help clients make this change - which is one of the things that sets me apart from other trainers - and I'd like to introduce to you one of the ways I do it - through The Warrior Programme’s online Mindset Coaching programme!

I’ve been developing this over the past few months and I’m so excited to be sharing it with you.

What’s it about?

  • Identify what you want your body to be like
  • Figure out what is holding you back from having the body you want
  • Helping you learn to appreciate and like your body
  • Clearing old beliefs so you can change your habits easily
  • Improve your positivity
  • Learn to rest and recover, so you can be more productive

The course includes:

  • A weekly lesson delivered by email (12 lessons) – which you will have access to forever
  • A monthly 45 minute group Q&A webinar, to be delivered via the Warriors Facebook group
  • Access to the private Warriors Facebook community

This is for you if you are:

  • Fed up of looking in the mirror and not liking what you see
  • Sick of feeling fed up with your body
  • Wanting to wear your old clothes in your wardrobe
  • Struggling with eating rubbish and keep going round in circles with it

If you would like to find out more about what the programme involves, please fill out the contact form below and tell us what you're struggling most with in your body. We'll send you some more information within 24 hours.

Denise Neale-Gordon says this about it:

'I enjoyed the mindset homework. I really was able to get right down to the root of the issues surrounding my weight of late and previously. There were lots of tears and lots of healing. I feel like I have turned a corner with all of this. It helped me to see that there was some clutter in my life that needed to go, physically, mentally and emotionally and there has been a lot of clearing out. I am feeling great internally and externally. The head hunger has gone because I am dealing with the mind issues and haven't had any of it.'

To get you started, take five minutes to think about the following:

Is there anything you want to change about your body? (if not, amazing!) This could be weight, posture, flexibility, pain, fitness, anything...

What small thing can you do this week to move you closer towards your goal?

Until next week,

My Strength Journey

My Strength Journey

I speak a lot about clients and their achievements on my video blogs, so this week, I decided to talk a little bit about where I've come from, how I started and where I'm going. For me, it's all about strength and this is what strength means to me:

What is Strength Part Two?

What is Strength Part Two?

Check this out - it's Emma's first go at a clean & press, built into a bigger sequence of movements that we call a barbell complex.

Emma trained with another personal trainer for two years and barely touched free weights, so she by no means walked into training with me a weights expert, and look at this:

VERY PROUD!

Why Warrior?

Why Warrior?

I get asked a lot, 'why did you choose the name 'The Warrior Programme?' or the word 'Warrior'.

So today, I'd like to explain to you why I picked it and what it means to be a Warrior!

Press play below to watch:

A Warrior is someone who is strong, both physically and mentally.

Before my Warriors start with me, this is where they are:

Working really hard in your job or on your business - driven and ambitious - you want to do well and you have big plans

You know your health is suffering because of it - your hours are long, you spend a lot of time sitting down and you're stressed

You don't know where to start with fixing it

You don't know how you're going to find the time

You know your posture isn't great and you don't feel that flexible

You feel unfit and you're not that strong

You're not a huge fan of your body - it doesn't look quite how you want it to

You don't know how to make healthy choices, particularly given you're always working and feel you have to rely on convenience food

You don't feel confident enough to just walk into a gym and start working on it yourself

You know you won't be that motivated doing it by yourself

You don't want your business or work ambitions to be hampered by your health or stress levels

And this is what they want:

A successful business or to be promoted to the level you want to reach in your company

Financial and physical freedom

Less stress

Better posture

To feel strong and fit

To feel really confident

To enjoy and feel at peace with the way you look

To reach your potential

What have they tried to get there?

Diets - didn't work

A gym membership - didn't go or went for a few minutes, didn't know what you were doing, felt silly and left

Perhaps another personal trainer - didn't get on and/or didn't get the results you wanted

Nothing - I just don't know what to do!

I help them get stronger, fitter, more confident, less stressed and more productive!

If any of this resonates with you, I'd love to invite you to a FREE TASTER SESSION. Now, I only make five spaces available for these every month and I'm full for June, but there are still places available for July.

If you'd like to book one, please click the button below:

This email is going out to a lot more than 5 people, so if you'd like to come, I'd recommend you book now to avoid disappointment - once the slots for July are gone, they're gone!

Very much looking forward to seeing you there!

Until next month,

Amy
