How Should I Train To Build Muscle Versus Building Strength?

How Should I Train To Build Muscle Versus Building Strength?

Training can be confusing. Lots of exercise classes and systems seem all singing, all dancing, they can sort EVERYTHING for you!!

So you start and everything doesn't get sorted and you end up confused. They said it would?!

The challenge is being specific (and naughty marketing!) - nothing can sort everything.

So the starting point is understanding what exactly it is that you want to change or achieve - which can be hard - then being sure that your training routine is working.

Here, Head Warrior, Amy, talks more about this:

I believe motivation, as most people understand it, is a fallacy. Most of us aren’t waking up being like, ‘yes I’m so pumped to go to the gym’, so waiting for that feeling can really hold some people back. For me, it’s more of a dedication to myself, because I want what I want, and I recognise that it’s consistency that is going to get me there. Time in the gym, and in recovery and all parts of the process is an investment in myself.

We all make time for the things that are important to us, and this process is incredibly important for me. It’s part of building my identity, developing who I am, and I can’t make many things more important than that!

The Warrior Team Update

The Warrior Team Update

We think it's fun to be able to share with you guys what we get up to each month, so here goes - PBs and progress and a bit of a laugh…

What are our secrets to getting the progress we get?

  1. Work hard - be prepared to show up for sessions even when we don’t feel like it.

  2. Be willing to fail and f**k things up.

  3. Know that it takes time - things rarely happen as fast as we want them to.

  4. Seek outside help - we all have our own coaches depending on what goals and struggles we have.

Reading about Strength

Reading about Strength

I'm often juggling a few books and here is a fantastic one I'm reading at the moment, which I would thoroughly recommend if you've got two X chromosomes and you're interested in what being strong could do and could mean for you:

It's so important to surround yourself with resources and people who support what you're looking to achieve. We all know how demoralising it can feel when you tell someone about a new goal of yours, or something you're working to achieve, and they snub it, or tell you it can't be done.

It may well shake your belief in yourself and whether you can do it or not, and that will then affect your action towards it.

What if you believe unequivocally that you could, or at least you borrowed that belief off someone who had it, temporarily, until you had it yourself? Think of what you could achieve.

How Much Sugar Can I Eat?

How Much Sugar Can I Eat?

In Bristol, we're so luck to have lots of gorgeous sugary things to eat, from the doughnuts at Pinkmans Bakery to the Portuguese custard tarts at St Nicks, but how do I balance eating sugar with losing weight? What sugar is it okay to eat? And what about things that say they're sugar free but aren't?

It's a bit of a minefield, so we've made this video:

Why do we do this?

Why do we do this?

What we can do can be fairly simple to 'get', but it's so important to us that we remember and communicate our 'why' regularly.

Helping women get stronger is SO important to us. Want to find out more? Click the button below:

Are You Looking For Something Different?

Are You Looking For Something Different?

Sick of the fitness industry always throwing weight loss and measurements in your face?

Whenever you look at Instagram, it's the latest skinny 'fitness' model or bodybuilder? We are too!

So maybe you're looking for something different? Which is probably why you've found us and are reading this blog post!

We specialise in helping women who want that something different. Who want to be more than just a number or a before and after photo. Who don't want 'standard' and who don't want to be 'skinny'. If this sounds like you, come say hey!

My Strength Journey

My Strength Journey

I speak a lot about clients and their achievements on my video blogs, so this week, I decided to talk a little bit about where I've come from, how I started and where I'm going. For me, it's all about strength and this is what strength means to me:

An Example of Strength

An Example of Strength

Strength can mean all sorts of things. It means different things to everyone.

Emma's been doing yoga for quite a while, but she didn't think she could do crow pose. We spent our session on Friday working through all the transitions to get to this:

We did:

  • Forward rolls
  • Dive forward rolls
  • Forward rolls off a swiss ball
  • Cartwheels
  • Round offs
  • Crow pose

Then the video, which is crow to headstand - something people can struggle for years with, but Emma mastered it within one session. SO COOL.

So what's strong here?

  • Emma's core
  • Emma's shoulders
  • Emma's mind - she was nervous, but so determined. She decided she was going to do it, so she did.

And that's where training for strength is important - it transfers skills to your real life. If you feel strong enough to take on the gym world, imagine what you can do in the real world!

Ask for a payrise?

Tell your partner what you want?

Stand up for yourself in a difficult situation?

The gym is just a tool to help you get stronger so you can ask for and receive what you want. Plus, you can do awesome things like this!

I'm going to be showcasing more examples of strength over the coming weeks, complete with hints and tips on how you can easily make yourself stronger.

What's the point of strength training?

You'll hear me talking about strength training a LOT! Why? What will I get out of it? Will I get big and bulky? What's so good about it?

Well, I'm here to answer some of your questions!
