I know some of you will be thinking that you can’t function in the morning until you’ve had your (third) cup of coffee. But while the energy enhancing qualities of coffee are well- established, you may not be aware that it can also help you to lose weight. How? By speeding up your metabolism.
Coffee stimulates thermogenesis, the process of heat-production in living organisms. By activating thermogenesis in your body, coffee speeds up the rate at which you burn fuel.
But don’t over-do it! Sticking to 1-2 cups a day will allow you to access the metabolism benefits, without the mood swings and energy crashes that we can experience when we have too much coffee.
Choosing wholegrain versions of carbs is an awesome idea as they are absorbed at a slower pace by your body, therefore having less of an impact on your blood sugar levels. The result? More sustained energy, less crashes and fewer cravings.
Whether to have full fat, skimmed or semi is an endless debate and not one we expect to resolve here! Just to add that whole milk is less processed that it’s brother and sister, meaning it can retain more nutritional value. As a result, the energy in it is released more gradually and you stay fuller for longer.
I’m a huge egg fan. I have eggs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, heck, I even have them as snacks. However, I don’t only love eggs for their taste and culinary diversity, I adore that they’re high in protein, which helps to manage your appetite and keep you fuller for longer. Less reaching for snacks = better chance of staying in the calorie deficit you ultimately need to be in to lose weight!
Peas may not be a particularly magical fruit, but they can certainly help make you lighter o your dancing feet. Why? Because they’re rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and fiber, making them a great way of keeping you full and stopping you from overeating. Fiber is one of nature’s most appetite suppressants, feeding the good bacteria in your gut and giving your digestive system a boost. Keep in mind, though, that while you can buy fiber supplements, these are around half as effective as natural fiber – such as peas.
Spice gives you a warmer life, but, in the case of chilli, it can also bring you a slimmer waist. Chilli, like coffee, helps speed up your metabolism, meaning that chilli burns calories, fat, and your mouth!
Closing off my list of seven great foods that help you achieve your target weight is a sweet treat you’ll be delighted to know you can eat – that’s right, chocolate (well, dark dark chocolate). Dark chocolate both cuts down the number of fatty acids your body absorbs and lowers your body’s insulin resistance – meaning your body can process its fuel more effectively, without spikes in your blood sugar which make you crave more sugar. Some people can lose the battle against weight loss before they’ve begun it because they fear that it will require too great a lifestyle change to keep to it. But have no fear as you’ve seen from the seven delicious foods in this list, you can eat many of the things you adore and lose weight at the same time.
Ultimately, losing weight comes down to:
1. Being in the right place in your life and mindset to make a committed change – for good.
2. Getting your body into a calorie deficit – burning more fuel than you’re eating. It’s not as simple as just a numbers game, but on a level, it really is.
3. Moving your beautiful body – the more you move, the more fuel you burn, the better you feel and the more you can fall in love with who you truly are. From a place of love, you can make great changes that will last for good.
